Embarking on a new adventure in Italy is a dream for many. From its rich history, stunning landscapes, delicious cuisine, and warm culture, the allure of moving to this beautiful country is undeniable. For pet owners, however, the prospect of relocating to Italy comes with additional considerations. Fortunately, with proper planning and preparation, moving to Italy with your furry companions can be a seamless and rewarding experience.

Research Italy’s Pet Entry Requirements

Before making any decisions, it’s crucial to research Italy’s pet entry requirements. The European Union (EU) has specific guidelines for pet travel, including Italy. To bring your pets to Italy, they will need to have:

a) Microchip: Ensure your pets are microchipped with an ISO 11784/11785 compliant 15-digit pet microchip. This chip must be registered with your current contact information.

b) Rabies Vaccination: All pets must be vaccinated against rabies at least 21 days before entering Italy. Make sure the vaccination is up-to-date and in accordance with the EU regulations.

c) EU Pet Passport: Obtain an EU Pet Passport from your veterinarian, which will include your pet’s microchip details, vaccination records, and health information. If you are coming from outside the EU, once you have arrived in Italy, make sure that your local vet issues an EU Pet Passport to facilitate travel within Europe.

d) Health Certificate: Pets arriving from outside the EU will require a health certificate issued by an accredited veterinarian within ten days of travel. Check with your local authorities for specific requirements.

Choose the Right Transport Method

When relocating to Italy with pets, you have several options for transportation. If you’re moving from a nearby European country, driving with your pets might be the least stressful option for them. However, if you’re coming from further away, flying might be necessary. If flying, try to choose a pet-friendly airline with a good reputation for pet travel.

Remember to book your pet’s transportation well in advance, as many airlines have a limited number of spots available for pets in the cabin and cargo hold.

Prepare Your Pets for Travel

Help your pets become familiar with their carriers or crates before the big move. Gradually introduce them to the carrier and reward them with treats and positive reinforcement. This process will help reduce anxiety and make the journey more comfortable for them.

Additionally, avoid feeding your pets a large meal before travel, as it could lead to motion sickness. However, ensure they have access to water to stay hydrated during the journey.

Find Pet-Friendly Accommodation

When searching for a new home in Italy, it’s essential to find pet-friendly accommodation. While Italy is known for its love of pets, not all rental properties or hotels may accept them. Utilize online resources and pet-friendly accommodation websites to find suitable places that welcome both you and your pets.

Register Your Pets in Italy

Upon arriving in Italy, register your pets with the local authorities. Visit the local ASL with your pet’s paperwork to ensure they are in compliance with the country’s regulations. If you are planning to stay in Italy for an extended period, you may also need to update your pet’s microchip information with your new address.

Find a Veterinarian

Locate a reputable veterinarian in your new area before you need one. Ask local pet owners for recommendations or search online forums to find a trusted veterinarian who speaks your language and can offer necessary care for your pets.

Keep Pets Safe and Comfortable During the Transition

The moving process can be stressful for pets. To ease the transition, keep their daily routines as consistent as possible. Set up a familiar space with their belongings, toys, and bedding in your new home. Spend quality time with them to provide comfort and reassurance during this adjustment period.

Relocating to Italy with pets requires careful planning, but the rewards of experiencing this beautiful country with your furry friends by your side are well worth the effort. By following the necessary steps for pet travel, finding pet-friendly accommodation, and ensuring your pets’ comfort and safety, you can make your move to Italy a delightful experience for both you and your four-legged companions. Embrace the adventure, and good luck on your new Italian journey!
