Italy has always been a coveted destination for foreigners because of its rich history, stunning landscapes, and vibrant culture. Now, with the introduction of Italy’s Digital Nomad Visa on April 5, 2024, the country opens its doors wider to a new wave of residents: highly skilled remote workers from outside the European Union. This groundbreaking initiative marks a significant shift in how professional life can be intertwined with the allure of Italian living, offering a unique blend of work-life balance in one of the world’s most sought-after destinations.

Who’s Eligible?

The Digital Nomad Visa caters to a specific group of individuals — those who embody the spirit of remote work while possessing high qualifications in their field. This includes tech specialists, online entrepreneurs, and other highly skilled professionals who can work independently or for companies based outside Italy. To qualify, applicants must meet several criteria, including:

  • Income: Demonstrate a minimum annual income of €28,000.
  • Health Insurance: Ensure that you have comprehensive health insurance that covers medical treatment and hospitalization throughout Italy.
  • Legal Clearance: Provide a clean criminal record.
  • Stable Living Conditions: Present proof of accommodation in Italy.
  • Experience: Show at least six months of experience in your remote work field.
  • Employment Verification: Have an employment contract or a binding offer that meets Italy’s requirements.

Key Benefits

The benefits of obtaining a Digital Nomad Visa are manifold, offering not just a chance to live in Italy but also substantial professional and personal advantages:

  • Residence Permit: Upon arrival, successful applicants can apply for a residence permit, which is valid for one year with options for renewal.
  • Family Unification: Family members can join the primary visa holder, receiving residence permits of the same duration.
  • Tax and Social Security Guidance: Navigate Italy’s social security system, either through bilateral conventions or Italian legislation, and receive your Italian tax code and VAT number upon arrival.

This visa not only facilitates the logistical aspects of living in Italy, but also ensures a seamless integration into the Italian way of life and compliance with tax regulations.

Stay Compliant

Visa holders must strictly follow tax regulations because compliance directly affects the residence permit. The Italian tax office will oversee compliance to guarantee the fulfillment of all legal requirements, and the permit can be revoked for any non-compliance regarding one’s tax status in Italy.

Eligibility Details

The visa is designed for non-EU citizens performing remote work as freelancers or employees or collaborators of companies based outside Italy. Notably, the visa is exempt from quota limits, simplifying the application process by eliminating the need for a work permit (nulla osta).

Applying for The Visa

The employer must sign a declaration attesting to the absence of criminal convictions related to employment within the last five years for prospective applicants. Upon arrival in Italy, visa holders must apply for a residence permit, which will be issued as a “digital nomad — remote worker” and is valid for one year, renewable under the same conditions.

Bringing Family Members

Digital nomads and remote workers can bring core family members (spouses and children under 18, parents under certain conditions), ensuring that moving to Italy is a family-inclusive decision.

Social Security Coverage

Bilateral agreements between Italy and the applicant’s country of origin determine social security coverage. In the absence of such agreements, Italian regulations will apply, ensuring comprehensive coverage for visa holders.
