Are You in Business La La Land?

One of the greatest fantasies that many business owners and sales professionals fall into is the get-rich-quick scheme that will bring immense wealth with the minimum amount of input.

Many people have been drawn into this way of thinking more times than they are willing to admit. They wanted things to happen faster, with less effort, and ideally to be risk-free. They dreamt of obtaining an incredible hike in business through some undiscovered strategy of plan.

The challenge for many people in business is that they don’t want to take the time to develop a focused strategy, nor to they want to test with beta clients and systems, and most of all, many don’t want to put in the hard work and persistence that it takes to build a strong brand and market presence.

It can be a hard pill to swallow knowing that the only way to really build a successful business is to effectively communicate your value, show consistent results for your clients, and then go the extra mile to deliver phenomenal service — something today that may see from another era.

In today’s virtual world, many business owners are waiting for their “Marilyn Monroe Moment” — whereby, they believe that if they upload a cute video, send a newsletter every now and again, write an article on LinkedIn that gets a lot of traction, that they will somehow be discovered, and that the clients will be lining up at the door. Sure, these things can happen, but they are rarer than a hen’s teeth!

The challenge is that we live in a world where many people think that all they have to do is believe and things will magically happen — we are bombarded by the stories of the online influencers who are making millions from their brands. Therefore, it can seem natural to think that if it can happen to them — why can’t it happen to us? If we persist on living in La La Land and thinking that clients will appear miraculously, sooner or later we’re going to be very disappointed.

The truth is that marketing in the real world has quite different rules. It takes time and a lot of hard work to build trust and a reputation of being serious, communicating your value, and signing up clients for the long haul.

You need to have persistence of steel and you must constantly be thinking of new products or services that you can bring to the market, now more than ever! I think we all go through the phase of living in La La Land, but eventually we realize that so-called marketing hacks and shortcuts, rarely produce long-term success in business.

Let’s face it — giving it your all everyday can be challenging and there are moments when it is anything but glamorous. However, over time you will discover that in the long run, it’s the only thing that works and produces tangible results.
